Pigmy skipper - Gegenes pumilio
![]() |
Family: Hesperiidae Flight Time: April-October Size: 26-28mm Altitude: 0-1800m |
| A dark coloured skipper which prefers to bask in
hot dry areas in the full glare of the sun. Like other skippers it has a
fast whirring flight, which often ends up with a return to its original
resting place.
There are a couple of similar skippers in Europe, which do fly together in some localities. Light markings on the upperwing are an aid to identification. The very similar, although slightly lighter, Mediterranean skipper, Gegenes nostrodamus, has a tuft on the edge of its hindwing, which is visible close up.
